When to reach for this template

Terrain is the dial: a gentle incline or a headwind for the brisk blocks, flat ground for the easy ones. Effort governs — brisk is short sentences only (RPE 6-7), easy is full conversation (RPE 3-4). Lift cadence rather than breaking into a jog. Run the week's exact cycle count. Equipment swaps. Bad weather or no safe route: the identical ladder on a treadmill at walking speed with incline as the dial, or on a bike or elliptical at the same effort. Never substitute running or jumping.
